6 Beautifully Inspiring Joinery Details

For woodworkers there’s nothing like admiring beautifully executed joinery.

The beauty of end grain paired with long grain. An insight into how something was made. Admiring tight, skilfully cut joints. Appreciating the expertise in setting the joints out. These are just some of the thoughts going through a woodworker's head as they look at a woodworking piece.

Here are six details that are well worth a look.

The moral of the story here is to be creative with your choice of joint. Subtle tweaks can elevate your joinery, as seen below.

1. CAMBERWELL CANTEEN CHAIRS - JAN HENDZEL STUDIO

There's so much going on here. But it's so good. Two rounded mortise and tenon joints , plus a bridle joint thrown in for good measure. All exquisitely cut and aesthetically pleasing.

2. TRAVERSO TABLE - FRANCESCO FACCIN

What makes this joint so interesting is the idea of the beam running right the length of the table. It forms the central spine, but also makes for a very interesting form when looking at the end of the table. Very creative joinery.

3. JOHANSEN TABLE - GREAT DANE FURNITURE

This is so interesting to look at. Keep this leg square, and this is a boring table. Raise the point of the outside corner, use a shadow gap, and do it beautifully using quarter sawn oak and you've raised it up to another level.

4. TUKI BEDSIDE TABLE - TIDE DESIGN

It's rare you'll see legs joined into the gable of a bedside table like this. This type of joint is often seen with the back of a chair. But it works so well here. What really sets this joinery apart is the curved top where the legs end. A beautiful, elegant touch.

5. CORD CHAIR - NENDO

It's hard to make out from this detail shot, but the leg of this chair is just 15 mm in diameter. Too flimsy you might think—but a steel frame runs throughout the inside of this chair. The wood only acts as cladding. The execution and curved angle are what make this detail stand out.

6. NUMBERS CHAIR - SANTI GUERRERO FONT

There's just so much to admire here. Who even thinks of doing joinery like this? It's just so visually interesting. The round leg balances the seat and back beautifully. This has been done expertly.
